Fire Door Signs FAQs
Get quick solutions to your common fire door sign buying questions
The appropriate sign depends on the type and function of the fire door. Common messages include Fire Door Keep Shut, Fire Door Keep Locked, Automatic Fire Door Keep Clear and other instructions relating to how the door should be managed.
The sign should reflect the actual fire-door arrangements for the building rather than applying the same message to every door.
Fire door signage may form part of the fire precautions required for a building, but the particular signs needed depend on the premises, the door's function and the applicable fire-safety requirements.
The building's fire risk assessment and fire-safety arrangements should be used to determine appropriate signage.
A fire door sign usually tells people how a fire door should be managed, for example Fire Door Keep Shut.
A fire exit sign identifies or directs people along an escape route towards a place of safety. The two types of sign therefore perform different functions.
Fire door signs should be clearly visible to people using or approaching the relevant door.
Depending on the door and the instruction required, signage may need to be displayed on the appropriate face or faces of the door so that the message can be seen before the door is used.
A Fire Door Keep Shut sign tells building users that the fire door should normally remain closed rather than being propped or wedged open.
Fire doors should only be held open using suitable systems where these form part of the building's approved fire-safety arrangements.
This sign is used to remind people not to obstruct an automatic fire door or prevent it from closing when required.
Objects, furniture, stock or equipment should not interfere with the door or its closing mechanism.
Not sure which fire door signs you need or where they should be displayed? Our practical guides explain the different fire door messages, how to choose suitable signage for each type of door and what to consider when positioning, reviewing and maintaining fire door signs around your premises.
