A power cut changes a familiar workplace in seconds. Corridors lose their landmarks, stairwells become difficult to judge and a standard printed fire exit sign can disappear into the dark. When the lights go out, your fire safety signs shouldn't. Clear escape-route and fire equipment signs must remain easy to find when people need them most.

For facilities managers, responsible persons and site managers, this is not simply a question of fitting brighter signs. It is about choosing the right sign material, positioning it properly and making sure it works alongside emergency lighting and the rest of the fire safety plan.

Why visibility after a power failure matters

During an evacuation, people do not always leave by the route they use every day. Smoke, alarm noise, reduced visibility and unfamiliar visitors can all make a straightforward route feel confusing. Fire exit signs direct occupants towards a place of safety, while fire action signs, extinguisher location signs and fire door notices support the wider response.

Electrical lighting may fail because of a local fault, a wider outage or damage caused by an incident. Emergency lighting is designed to provide a back-up, but its coverage and duration depend on the system installed and maintained at the premises. Signs that continue to be visible independently give occupants another useful visual reference point.

This is especially relevant in warehouses, workshops, schools, care settings, hospitality venues, construction compounds and large office buildings. Long routes, changes in level and areas with no natural light can all make a blackout more difficult to manage.

In an emergency, a sign should confirm what is available without causing delay or uncertainty. Mounting an extinguisher sign directly above, or immediately beside, the equipment makes it easier to locate from a distance.

Start with the escape route, not the catalogue

Pay particular attention to areas where signs can be blocked by open doors, seasonal displays, pallet storage, temporary hoarding or new equipment. In industrial premises, racking layouts change. In schools and offices, furniture moves. On construction sites, routes can be altered frequently. A compliant sign hidden from view does not give much practical help.

Consider viewing distance too. A small sign may be suitable above a nearby door but inadequate at the far end of a warehouse aisle. Larger-format fire exit signage, repeated directional signs and signs fixed perpendicular to the wall can improve visibility where occupants approach from different directions.

Ceiling-mounted and projecting signs can be useful in wide corridors, reception areas and open-plan spaces. They are less likely to be obscured by people, furniture or door swings. However, installation must suit the surface, ceiling height and the sign’s viewing angle. There is no value in fitting a projecting sign so high that the pictogram cannot be read.

Check the material, finish and environment

Sign material should be selected for the location rather than the lowest initial price alone. Self-adhesive photoluminescent signs are quick to fit on clean, smooth internal surfaces. Rigid plastic signs offer a more substantial finish and can be fixed to walls, doors and other appropriate surfaces. For demanding environments, consider whether moisture, cleaning chemicals, dust, impact or temperature changes will affect the sign and its fixing method.

A kitchen, washroom, factory floor and external muster area will not have the same requirements. External fire assembly point signs, for example, need a weather-suitable material and a location that remains clear throughout the year. Internal signs may need to withstand regular cleaning, particularly in public buildings, food premises and healthcare settings.

Where a message needs to identify a site-specific route, door or procedure, a custom sign can be the better solution. This is useful for large estates, multi-occupancy buildings, temporary sites and premises with unusual layouts. Compliance is more than buying the right symbol

A planned replacement programme can be more practical than changing signs one at a time without considering the full route.

Look for faded surfaces, damaged corners, loose fixings, changed routes and signs that are no longer visible because of stock or refurbishment work.

A simple low-light check

Do not wait for a real power failure to find a problem. Once photoluminescent signs have had normal exposure to light, inspect the route in reduced lighting conditions where it is safe to do so. This can reveal poor charging, awkward placement or unexpected obstructions.
