What Warning Signs Should Factories Display?

Under the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996, safety signs should be used where a significant risk cannot be avoided or adequately reduced by other means. A sign is not a replacement for guarding, training, ventilation, segregated walkways, safe systems of work or personal protective equipment. It is the visual instruction that reinforces those measures.

A warning sign normally uses a black pictogram on a yellow triangular background with a black border. Its purpose is to alert people to danger or caution them about a hazard. Mount signs at a consistent, unobstructed height where practical, and check that racking, open doors, stacked goods or machinery do not block the view. Material selection matters too. Rigid plastic signs are a practical choice for many indoor factory locations because they are hard-wearing and easy to fix. Where a sign may be seen in low light, consider the lighting conditions as part of the assessment. Keep signs clear, current and understood

Inspect safety signs as part of routine workplace checks. Replace signs that are faded, damaged, dirty, obscured or out of date. Update them when equipment is moved, a process changes, a traffic route is altered or a storage area is reassigned.

Use recognised symbols wherever possible, supported by concise text where it improves clarity. If contractors, agency workers or employees have different first languages, pictograms are especially useful, but induction and training must still confirm the meaning of critical site rules.
